Anna Sforza (
Milan,
July 21,
1476 –
December 2,
1497) was the daughter of Duke
Galeazzo Maria Sforza of
Milan.
She married
Alfonso I d'Este, future
Duke of Ferrara.
For political reasons she married Alfonso, heir to
Ercole I d'Este.
Her uncle,
Ludovico Sforza married
Beatrice d'Este, a daughter of Ercole I d'Este.
Her sister,
Bianca Maria Sforza married Holy Roman Emperor
Maximillian I.
The bride and groom were both fifteen when, in January 1491, their wedding took place amidst banquets, receptions and theatrical representations.
On
December 2 1497 she give birth to her first child, which died immediately after being baptized; Anna died too. She was only 21.
Mother and child were buried together in the monastery of San Vito, of which the young Sforza was benefactor.
Her death also marked the end of the bond between the Sforza and Este families.
Alfonso remarried with
Lucrezia Borgia.
